NC IOLTA (North Carolina Interest on Lawyers’ Trust Accounts) invites stakeholders to consider expressing interest in joining the Board of Trustees in the coming year. Two seats on the nine-member board will open in September.
As the philanthropic focus of the North Carolina State Bar, NC IOLTA improves access to justice by funding high-quality legal assistance. Staff work directly with lawyers and financial partners across the state to set up interest-bearing accounts, with the interest funding programs for the public’s benefit. These funds are generated at no cost to attorneys, their clients or North Carolina taxpayers.
Since its inception in 1983, NC IOLTA has awarded more than $134 million to organizations that help provide legal aid to low-income individuals, families and children.
Trustees work alongside staff to fulfill the program’s mission to improve the lives of North Carolinians by strengthening the justice system as a leader, partner and funder. While the NC General Assembly’s one-year freeze on NC IOLTA grantmaking continues to impact the ability to fund civil legal aid in 2026, trustees and staff remain committed to NC IOLTA’s vision of a North Carolina where all people can effectively meet their legal needs.
Trustees may serve up to two three-year terms. Of the nine-member board, six must be active members of the State Bar. Appointments are made by the State Bar Council, typically at the July Council meeting.
The board generally meets in person three times a year, in April, September and December, with occasional virtual meetings as needed.
