NC IOLTA Welcomes Two New Board Members

Tom Nelson, executive vice president and chief credit officer for New Republic Bank, and Anna Hamrick, a North Carolina board-certified specialist in workers’ compensation law at Grimes Teich Anderson LLP, joined on Sept. 1.

NC IOLTA welcomed two new trustees to the board on Sept. 1.

Tom Nelson

Tom Nelson is the executive vice president and chief credit officer for New Republic Bank. He oversees the processes, policies and procedures for credit approvals for all firm lending activities.

Nelson has extensive experience in senior leadership roles overseeing lending and credit approval practices in financial services firms. He has experience in working with boards of directors and in achieving corporate growth as a member of the executive teams.

Prior to joining the firm, Nelson was the executive vice president and senior credit officer for a multi-state region of Iberiabank.  He also served as the executive vice president and chief credit officer at BNC Bank, where he was responsible for the safety and soundness of the banks $6B loan portfolio. He served in several roles at Sterling South Bank, including chief credit officer and interim president.

Nelson brings experience in business merger and acquisition activities. He led the integration of the credit functions from 10+ acquired institutions into a growth-oriented financial services organization.

Nelson’s early career experience includes service as a captain in the USMC as a naval aviator. He received an honorable discharge from the USMC before beginning his financial services career. He earned a B.S. in Business Administration at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Anna Hamrick

Anna Hamrick is a North Carolina native who has been practicing law for more than 25 years. She received a B.A. in English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1991 and a law degree from George Washington University in 1994. She first became licensed to practice law in Virginia in 1994, followed by Washington, D.C. in 1995.

In 1996, Hamrick returned to North Carolina and has been practicing here ever since. She is a North Carolina Board Certified Specialist in Workers’ Compensation Law and concentrates her practice at Grimes Teich Anderson LLP in the areas of Workers’ Compensation and Social Security Disability.

Hamrick was North Carolina State Bar Councilor from 2016 to 2024. She also serves as a Mountain Area Volunteer Attorney, representing people who are seeking Medicaid for the disabled. In the past, she has served as president of the Western NC Chapter of the N.C. Association of Women Attorneys; as a member of the North Carolina Bar Association’s Medico-Legal Liaison Committee; and as treasurer and a board member of Pisgah Legal Services.

Board Expresses Gratitude to Outgoing Members

Nelson and Hamrick join returning board members Judge John Arrowood and Ted Edwards (who serve as chair and vice-chair, respectively), Alex Dale, John Keane, Cole Phelps, Sharika Shropshire and Kyle Smith. 

The board and staff at NC IOLTA are grateful to outgoing chair Shelby Duffy Benton and vice-chair Heather Culp for their years of service to the critical mission of NC IOLTA: to improve the lives of North Carolinians by strengthening the justice system as a leader, partner and funder.
